Everything you need, nothing more

Quirkos laptop bubbles

Qualitative research with Quirkos is a fresh experience.

Everything is visual, colourful and engaging. Use the same intuitive interface and features across Windows, Mac, Linux or your browser with Quirkos Web, which even lets you work on tablets and phones without installing anything. Projects automatically save after each action so you don't lose work.

Whether you are just starting qualitative analysis or you are a seasoned professional, the process is quick, and keeps you close to your data. Quirkos is the best way to work with in-depth, 'small data'.

Coding qualitative data

Coding is how you define a section of text as being relevant to a particular topic or node. It's what usually takes the most time in qualitative analysis and when using qualitative analysis software, so Quirkos tries to make coding as quick and easy as possible. Just drag and drop a selection of text onto one of the bubble 'Quirks' to assign the text to that code. Quirks grow whenever a section of text is added to them, with the relative size showing the importance of themes emerging from your sources. Quirkos lets you easily:

  • Group codes by sub and sub-sub categories and
  • View text by node/code, or in the context of the source

Keep close to your data

The whole interface of Quirkos is designed to keep you close to your data, and help you read it in new ways.

Wherever you see results in Quirkos, you'll see your quotes, where you can copy and paste them to help your write-up. Everything is just a click away, including visualisations of connections in your data. This will quickly show you how much codes are overlapping, but keeps your text to hand so you can understand the differences.

Comparative analysis

Comparative analysis helps you look for trends and patterns in your data, or show the stories of people in context with others. Quirkos has unique side-by-side views that can show you quotes and results from different groups of participants or sources. This lets you read across and see if different groups are talking about different topics, or using different discourse.

Accessibility

Quirkos works on Windows, Mac, Linux and in the browser with Quirkos Web. All versions are compatible with each other, so you can work with anyone on any platform.

There's also great support for different languages and scripts in both text and codes, and with the REFI-QDA exchange standard, you can import or export from other qualitative analysis software like NVivo, MAXQDA, Atlas.ti and many more.

Collaboration and teamwork

Quirkos is designed to help teamwork and collaborative coding, and simplify the whole process of working together on qualitative analysis and coding. Quirkos Cloud lets you work together in real-time, with others' work popping up on your screen as it happens. Use the live chat to discuss or document the process, or work offline and use file merge to bring collaborators' work together. You can see work from particular coders, and see a side-by-side comparison of their interpretations.

Bringing data into Quirkos

Sources and mixed-methods research

Your Quirkos project can contain dozens of sources, and you can manage and categorise them in any way you like. Import text, PDF and Word files directly, or create a new source from text copied to the clipboard. Any data you can open on your computer you can paste into Quirkos, including websites and even Facebook posts.

When working with mixed-method survey data which includes qualitative and quantitative data, you can create structured question projects to analyse them, and bring in all your data into Quirkos. Bring closed and open-ended questions into Quirkos in a click from spreadsheets, or survey platforms such as LimeSurvey and SurveyMonkey. Code the open-ended responses, and analyse the results by your discrete or numerical properties. Quirkos software can also produce graphs and reports to summarise your quantitative and discrete data.

Exported transcripts in Word

Reports

Getting your data from your qualitative project out to the real world is a quick and flexible process with Quirkos. Users can export a report only covering certain respondents: want to show only the quotes from women aged 18-24? No problem.

Or generate reports for the whole project, complete with graphical views, with all your coded text sorted as you like it. Get images to load straight into PowerPoint or Word, generate PDF reports to share with clients, or create a quick printed copy. You can also create a dynamic and interactive website of your findings which visitors can explore, and customise it with your organisation's visual identity.

Quirkos even lets you export a source as a Word file, complete with all your coding as colour-coded highlights to share or print. You can also export your work as CSV files, to bring your work into Excel, SPSS or other qualitative analysis software for further statistical analysis.
